The Immaculate Conception: What the Feast Celebrates

December 8 is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. It celebrates that the Virgin Mary, from the first moment of her own conception in her mother's womb, was kept free from original sin by the grace of God, because she was to be the Mother of Jesus.

It's often mixed up with the virgin birth, but it isn't about Jesus' conception. It's about Mary's. God prepared a pure home for his Son, and Mary is the first to be saved by the merits of Christ, in a perfect way, before she was born.

Christians believed this for centuries, and on December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX solemnly defined it as a dogma of the faith. Four years later, in 1858, Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette at Lourdes and called herself "the Immaculate Conception." Earlier still, in 1830, the Miraculous Medal given to St. Catherine Labouré carried the prayer "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."

Mary under this title is the patroness of the United States, and the feast is a holy day of obligation here. In 2026 it falls on a Tuesday in the second week of Advent.

A prayer for the day: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Amen."
